Fitting for a town settled in 1845 by people who brought bakeries and dance halls with them and then found water that stays about seventy-two degrees no matter the month. The Comal runs roughly two and a half miles from spring to mouth, one of the shortest rivers in the country, and most of the state has floated it. Cypress roots hold the banks together. Somebody's cooler is always tied to somebody's tube. Up the road in Gruene the dance hall floor has been taking boot heels since 1878 and nobody has bothered to level it.
