Cat Art With a Point of View

Caya Crum's cats have a way of finding the people who need them. Some smoke. Some ride horses. Some hold goldfish in Florence. Some wear pearls and have tattoos. One is a black panther draped in pink peonies. All of them are unmistakably hers — contemporary cat art painted in bold color with a dry sense of humor and a deep affection for the kind of creature that does exactly what it wants.

This collection brings together every piece of cat art in the studio, big cats and small. Whether you're a cat person, a Freddie Mercury fan, or just someone who appreciates a smoking orange tabby in a gold frame — there's a cat print here with your name on it.

The Cowboy Cats

The ones people write in about are the cowboy cats. Smokey started it — an orange tabby in a Colt 45 collar with a cigarette and no apparent intention of explaining himself. Then came Abbie in whiskey gold, Rosie the cowgirl cat, Cherry Cat in her portrait pose, and a cat riding a bronco like he has done it before. They came out of the same series as the western art, drawn in the same hand and the same week, which is why a cowboy cat hangs so easily next to an actual cowboy.

Funny Cat Art, and the Well-Behaved Kind

The collection splits about evenly. On one side, funny cat artwork — Cataburger, Banana Kitty, the Freddie Mercury cats, Fluffy the smoking angel. On the other, the composed ones: Suki in blue-and-white chinoiserie, the Preppy Staffordshire cat, the English schoolgirl cat, and the Panther City panther in florals. If you are building a wall, take one from each side. Colorful cat wall art works best when the cats disagree with each other.

All cat prints here begin as Caya Crum's original paintings and drawings, printed to order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do these make good gifts for cat people?
They are possibly the best gift for cat people. We hear this constantly at shows.

Is this cat art of a specific breed?
Mostly not — these are portraits of personalities rather than breed studies. Tabbies, calicos, a black panther, a tiger and one very self-possessed Staffordshire mantle cat. People tend to pick the one that looks like theirs.

What room does cat art belong in?
Wherever the cat already sits, which is to say all of them. In practice the funny ones land in kitchens and hallways, the composed ones in bedrooms and entries, and the cowboy cats wherever someone wants to be asked about them.

Can I hang cat art with the western prints?
That is the intended use. The cowboy cats were drawn as part of the western series, so the palette and line already match.

Cats tolerate us; art of them is the least we owe. Equal time for the loyal opposition lives in dog wall art, the bigger animals are in horse art prints and cow art, the blue-and-white set continues in chinoiserie animal prints, the softer end is in cottagecore wall art, and things get stranger in weirdcore art.
