The print is a weathered Texas silhouette carrying the flag — dusty blue field, cream and faded brick-red bars, a five-point star gone soft at the points — on a chalky, scraped-plaster cream ground, with heavy black wood-type capitals stamped over it. It suits a town that has never been polished and would be worse off if it were. Denton is the courthouse sitting square in the middle of everything with the traffic going around it like water around a rock. It is a horn section running the same eight bars somewhere off Fry Street at eleven at night. It is the line out the door at Beth Marie's in August, because ice cream is the only reasonable answer to that kind of heat. Interstate 35 comes up from the south, splits in two here, and leaves for two different cities — which is about right for a place that has always been its own thing in between them.
It hangs well in an entry or over a desk, and better in a group — there is more of the state in Texas wall art, and it sits comfortably beside the rest of the Texas typography and quote prints.
Questions
Is that really a Steinbeck line? The Texas part is. In Travels with Charley: In Search of America (1962) he wrote, "Texas is a state of mind. Texas is an obsession." The city versions, Denton included, are Crum Art's own riff on him and not his words.
Is it a good gift? It mostly goes to people who left Denton and to people who just bought a house there.
