Schepps Milk Amphora — Vintage Kitchen Art by Betsy Crum

Here is a proper Greek amphora, scroll handles and all, painted in warm terracotta browns against a soft peach ground — and across its belly, right where you'd expect Achilles, the word schepps in white bubbly script. Schepps was the old Dallas dairy, the name on the milk in a whole lot of Texas kitchens and lunchrooms. Betsy has promoted it to antiquity, right alongside the rest of our Texas-style Greco Roman art.

Look closer and the joke keeps paying. White daisies and little asterisk blooms drift across the vase like they wandered off a milk label, and around the upper band — the stretch Greek potters saved for chariot races — a frieze of tiny white cows and horses runs a victory lap. That's the tell. This urn was never holding wine.
