Austin carries a lot of this collection: the Austin Motel sign, Continental Club and Saxon Pub, Shady Grove, County Line BBQ, Holiday House, Hut's Hamburgers, Top Notch, and Sandy's Frozen Custard glowing orange against a summer dusk. Further out, the Gypsy Tea Room in Dallas. The Pearl neon and Randy's Bingo in San Antonio. Leddy's boots, Joy Floral and the Holiday Skate arrow in Fort Worth. Furr's Cafeteria. And the South Plains Fair sign, which is what September looks like if you grew up in Lubbock.
Brands get the same treatment. Big Red shows up three ways — two bottles, a yellow single, a Warhol grid — with the Waco distribution building underneath a big sky to say where it came from. NuGrape, Bubble Up and a Coca-Cola refresco panel keep it company, alongside Schepps milk poured into an amphora, a bottle of Liquid Paper, Zabar's on Broadway, and a Lone Star bottlecap blown up to pop-art scale.
Some of it is pure analog nostalgia. Willie Nelson's Greatest Hits on cassette, twice — once in color, once in line. The Judy's Moo tape. The Cutter Bill Western World matchbook from Carl's stack. Mildred's last cigarette, still burning. And the smoking cowboy cats Caya paints like they strolled out of a 1950s ad and never went back.
