Big Red on Butter Yellow — Red Kitchen Decor by Betsy Crum

Betsy painted Texas's favorite red soda the way it deserves to be painted: one bottle, standing at attention, flat and bright as a gas-station cooler door in July. The red-and-white label reads loud from across the room, the glass is that unmistakable stoplight red, and behind it all she dropped the shadow in aqua blue — not gray, never gray — so the bottle looks lit from the inside. Subtlety was never the point. As red kitchen decor goes, this is the direct approach: one bottle, one color, nowhere else to look.

What is Big Red?

A bright red cream soda out of Texas, sweet with a bubblegum-and-vanilla note. It has been a fixture of South Texas weekend mornings and Central Texas barbecue joints for generations, which is why a single bottle reads as a Texas subject and not just a soda.

Where did Big Red get its start?

Waco, Texas, in 1937. It was sold at first under the name Sun Tang Red Cream Soda, but people kept asking for that big red drink and the nickname took the label over.

Why is the shadow aqua instead of gray?

Aqua sits nearly opposite red on the color wheel, so the edge where the two meet buzzes a little. A gray shadow would have let the bottle sit still, and Betsy did not want it sitting still.
