Arrow Ford — Vintage Sign Art from Abilene, Texas by Betsy Crum

The red steel letters spell it out plain: ARROW FORD. They sit low in the frame, skeletal letters standing on a rooftop armature, built in an era when a dealership wanted the whole highway to know exactly where it was. Betsy gives them the bottom sliver of the print and hands everything else to the sky — an enormous wash of turquoise-teal streaked with peach clouds, the kind of evening West Texas produces on a regular basis and never brags about.

That proportion is the whole point. Out in the Big Country, the sky is the main event and everything people build is trim — the same arrangement that keeps Holly's Drive-In up in Lubbock humble. A vintage sign holding its ground under all that color is about as Abilene as it gets.

Where It'll Work in Your House

The vertical format was made for narrow walls — the hallway everybody passes twice a day, the slot beside the office bookcase, the den wall that needed one true thing on it. The skinny stretch beside a china cabinet counts, too — it stands tall among our dining room wall art. It runs naturally with the rest of our Texas wall art, holds its own among western art, and makes a sharp pick from Texas gifts for anyone homesick for the Big Country.

Betsy Crum, who photographs Texas from inside it. Original family artwork, printed to order — see more of Betsy's work here.

If you've ever pointed a car down I-20 and felt something loosen in your chest around Abilene, this one's yours. It keeps good company with our other roadside Texans — Allsup's under its own big sky and the Austin Motel sign glowing farther east.

Product FAQ

What is the Arrow Ford sign in this print?

It's the vintage rooftop sign from the Arrow Ford dealership in Abilene, Texas — red skeletal steel letters raised on an open framework so the West Texas sky shows straight through them. A landmark for anyone who ever drove that stretch of town.

Why does the sky take up most of the print?

Because in West Texas, the sky is the landscape. The sign sits low in the frame and the turquoise and peach get the other eighty percent — which is roughly the honest ratio out there.

Who's the Arrow Ford print a good gift for?

Abilene expats, anyone with West Texas roots, and people who slow down for old signs. If they've ever said 'the sky just looks different out there,' this is the proof they can hang.

What rooms does the Arrow Ford print work in?

Office, den, and hallway are its natural habitats — the vertical format loves a narrow wall. Anywhere you want a little roadside Texas looking back at you while you work.

Will this look like an original painting or a print?

Crum Art takes the scanning and photographing of original paintings seriously — we work to capture the texture of the canvas or paper the original was created on, so that texture shows through in the print. Combined with the cotton rag paper’s own subtle surface and the hand-signing, many customers say they cannot tell if it’s an original or a print. That’s intentional. These are not flat digital reproductions — they are fine art prints that carry the soul of the original.

What sizes does this print come in?

Our fine art prints are available in standard rectangle and square sizes. Rectangles: 8x10 unframed matted to 11x14, 11x14 unframed, 16x20, 18x24, and 24x36. Squares: 8x8 unframed matted to 12x12, 12x12 unframed, 16x16, 20x20, and 24x24. Each size ships ready to frame, making it easy to find the right fit for your wall.

How do I make a gallery wall with art prints?

Start with an anchor piece and build outward — many Crum Art prints are part of series designed to group together as a statement gallery wall, or hang individually as standalone pieces. Since every image is sized to fit standard frames, mixing sizes is easy: lay the arrangement out on the floor first, keep about two to three inches between frames, and center the whole grouping at eye level.
