The English mantel spaniels every Southern grandmother kept in a pair, painted by Caya Crum in classic blue, in hot pink, tattooed, beaded and bow-tied. Staffordshire dog art prints, signed and made to order in Texas.

What Are Staffordshire Dogs?

Staffordshire dogs are the pottery spaniels made in Staffordshire, England from the 1840s on, sold in facing pairs to sit at either end of a Victorian mantel. They crossed the Atlantic with the china cabinet and never left: a pair of Staffordshire dogs is the mark of a collected Southern living room, the grandmillennial mantel, the blue-and-white kitchen with a ginger jar on the shelf. Caya's dogs keep the pose and the gilt collar and change everything else.

Pink Staffordshire Dogs and Blue Staffordshire Dogs

Start with the pair: the Blue Staffordshire Good Dog and the Pink Staffordshire Luck Dog, mantel royalty gone a little punk. Add the Preppy Staffordshire Cat, who has the posture of old money and the tattoos of somebody who made different choices, or hang all three as The Staffordshire Set. The Staffordshire Tattoo Dog is the sketchbook version, with a banana in the frame.

Where a Staffordshire Dog Print Hangs

Over the mantel, in a powder room, above a nursery crib, beside the mahjong table, or as the pink note on a blue-and-white gallery wall. Every print comes in five sizes from 8x10 (matted) to 24x36 on archival cotton rag paper, and any three prints are 20% off in the gallery wall layout generator. The dogs belong to the same universe as our chinoiserie wall art, the blue-and-white 4-H animals painted for the rodeo crowd.

Staffordshire Dog Questions

Are these real Staffordshire dogs?
They are art prints of paintings by Caya Crum, not antique figurines. Each one is drawn from the classic Staffordshire spaniel pose, then painted in Caya's colors and printed to order in Fort Worth, Texas.

Why are Staffordshire dogs sold in pairs?
Victorian potters made them as mirror-image pairs to flank a mantel clock. Caya paints singles that pair up, a blue Good Dog and a pink Luck Dog, so you can hang one or both.

What size Staffordshire dog print should I buy?
11x14 is the most popular for a powder room or a shelf; 16x20 and 18x24 hold a mantel; 24x36 makes the pair the whole wall. All sizes are unframed unless noted, with an 8x10 matted to 11x14.

Do the Staffordshire dogs match the chinoiserie prints?
Yes. Same palette family, same gilt-frame mockups, same paper. The blue dog sits with the blue-and-white animals; the pink dog is the accent.
