Fiesta on the Table — Papel Picado Art by Caya Crum
Caya strung the papel picado first: a yellow banner and a blue one, and the blue one spells out FIESTA, in case the rest of the painting left any doubt about where the evening's headed. Below the banners sits the supper plan — a bag of Pioneer cornbread mix leaning easy against a Lone Star tallboy, the whole arrangement set on warm painted woodgrain like a kitchen table that's hosted a few of these. Down at the base there's a little scatter of blue, the way confetti hangs around after a party worth having.
Pioneer has been milling in Texas since 1851, and that blue-and-white bag with the red script — butter pat and all — is grocery-shelf shorthand for home cooking across South Texas. We love the mill itself enough that there's a whole Pioneer Flour Mill skyline print in the family. The Lone Star does what Lone Star does: shows up, looks right, asks nothing of anybody. Together they make the still-life version of a San Antonio Saturday, and this vertical hangs right at home with the rest of our San Antonio artwork.

What is Fiesta San Antonio?
Fiesta San Antonio is the citywide festival San Antonio has thrown nearly every spring since 1891. It runs for about ten days each April, with parades, live music, food stands, and papel picado strung over just about everything. The blue banner across the top of this painting spells FIESTA in its honor.
Is the Pioneer bag in this painting a real product?
It sure is. Pioneer is the flour and baking-mix brand from Pioneer Flour Mills, a Texas company that has been milling since 1851 and whose San Antonio mill is a hometown landmark.
