Here's what's in the painting: a tan cowboy hat floating in place, a blue shirt holding its own shape, a cigarette burning right where a mouth ought to be, red canyon mesas standing witness behind. Here's what's not in the painting: the cowboy. He's there — the hat sits right, the collar's squared away — he's just not visible, and he sees no reason that should slow the day down.
The whole trick is in the gaps. Where a face belongs there's canyon; between the brim and the collar, more canyon. The shirt still has shoulders in it, the hat still has a crown holding its shape, and the cigarette is going, so the man is entirely present — he's just been built out of everything standing behind him. Caya paints the mesas warm and close, which is what keeps him from reading as spooky. He's not haunting the place. He lives here.
