Horror Art — Shelley Duvall as Wendy Torrance
This is Caya Crum's portrait of Shelley Duvall as Wendy in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining — the big, brown, glassy eyes that carry the whole last act of the film, terror and stubborn decency in the same face. Kubrick drove her to the edge on a famously grueling shoot, and what survived is one of the great performances in horror: perfectly cast, completely unguarded. Behind her runs the Overlook's hexagonal carpet — that brown, orange and red pattern every horror fan knows on sight — and Caya painted the whole thing in her loose, saturated style, so this is a hand-painted homage and horror movie fan art, not a movie still. It belongs with its two companions — the Jack Nicholson print and the Shining American Gothic print — and the three together put the whole door scene on one wall.
There's a Texas reason she's here, too. Shelley Duvall was born in Fort Worth, less than a mile from the Crum family's house. Before Wendy she was Olive Oyl in Popeye and Pansy in Time Bandits, and she went on to make Faerie Tale Theatre and Tall Tales & Legends for a whole generation of kids who didn't know they were being raised by a Cannes-winning actress.
