Timothy stands against hot pink in a cream hat pushed back off dark curly hair, a gold hoop in one ear, a rust-red bandana at his throat. Then you look down and there it is — two swallows with their wings out, a rose, and a heart with an arrow through it and MOM lettered on the banner.
That's old American traditional tattooing, and every piece of it means something. Sailors earned swallows for the miles they'd covered, and the other half of the story is that a swallow always finds its way home — which is why they were worn by men who spent their lives leaving. The MOM heart is the oldest joke in the trade and the most sincere thing in it, both at once.

What tattoos does Timothy have?

What do the swallows stand for?
A sailor earned one for roughly every five thousand miles he had put behind him at sea. They also stood for getting home again, on the reasoning that a swallow always finds its way back, which is why they were worn by men who spent their working lives leaving.
