On a warm camel ground, black hand-lettering stacks itself into the silhouette of Texas — Panhandle up top, the long Gulf curve below — and every inch of the shape is built from one sentence: I AM TRYING TO LEARN TO BE WHO I AM. There's no outline and no map. The words hold the state together all by themselves, which feels right for a man who could hold a whole room with six strings. Stevie Ray was born in Dallas's Oak Cliff, became himself on Austin stages, and by the time he died in 1990 he had changed how the electric blues gets played. He could have left us a brag. He left us this instead.
