Amarillo Art | Amarillo State of Mind | Betsy Crum

Steinbeck's line is that Texas is a state of mind, an obsession. Amarillo is that with nothing standing in front of it — 3,600 feet up on the Llano Estacado, where you can watch weather come in for an hour before it reaches you.

Amarillo Art and West Texas Prints by Betsy Crum

The name runs across a weathered Texas flag in heavy, slightly broken letterpress capitals, which suits a town built on hard work and proud of it. Amarillo is wind first: steady, out of the south, moving anything not tied down. Then it is the smell off the feedlots when it shifts, which people up there will tell you, without smiling, smells like money. It is ten Cadillacs buried nose-down in a field off I-40 with somebody's rattling spray can left in the grass beside them. It is flat in every direction for an hour, and then Palo Duro Canyon opens twenty-five miles south with no warning at all, eight hundred feet straight down out of a wheat field.

Put it next to the Be Nice big Texas sky print, line it up with the rest of the series in Texas wall art if you are building a wall of home, or hang it among the Texas quote prints. It travels well to anyone missing the Panhandle — see homesick Texan gifts.

Product FAQ

What is the first thing about Amarillo?

The wind. Steady, out of the south, moving anything not tied down. The broken letterpress capitals suit a town that has always been more useful than pretty.

Which room takes a Panhandle print?

A den, an office, or a hallway. It is 3,600 feet of flat country compressed into one word, so it wants a wall you walk past rather than sit under.

Is it for people who left the Panhandle or people who just landed there?

Both, and the second group tends to buy it faster. Newcomers are usually still adjusting to the wind and find it funny to own the joke.

Are the Cadillacs in the picture?

No. The print is the name over a worn flag. The buried Cadillacs off I-40, the feedlots, and Palo Duro opening up out of a wheat field are what the word carries, and the artwork leaves room for whichever one is yours.

Will this look like an original painting or a print?

Crum Art takes the scanning and photographing of original paintings seriously — we work to capture the texture of the canvas or paper the original was created on, so that texture shows through in the print. Combined with the cotton rag paper’s own subtle surface and the hand-signing, many customers say they cannot tell if it’s an original or a print. That’s intentional. These are not flat digital reproductions — they are fine art prints that carry the soul of the original.

What sizes does this print come in?

Our fine art prints are available in standard rectangle and square sizes. Rectangles: 8x10 unframed matted to 11x14, 11x14 unframed, 16x20, 18x24, and 24x36. Squares: 8x8 unframed matted to 12x12, 12x12 unframed, 16x16, 20x20, and 24x24. Each size ships ready to frame, making it easy to find the right fit for your wall.

How do I make a gallery wall with art prints?

Start with an anchor piece and build outward — many Crum Art prints are part of series designed to group together as a statement gallery wall, or hang individually as standalone pieces. Since every image is sized to fit standard frames, mixing sizes is easy: lay the arrangement out on the floor first, keep about two to three inches between frames, and center the whole grouping at eye level.
