Banana Cowboy Bandit Art by Caya Crum

The Cowboy Stance is perfect — the forward lean, the trailing hand, the deliberate stride of a man crossing a street to settle something. Then she put a banana in it. It sits in his right hand going spotty at the tip, and there is a second one riding in the holster on his hip where the pistol belongs — because he came prepared. It is the quietest thing in the painting and the part people point at once they have finished looking at the shirt.

The clothes do real work here. A salmon shirt covered in blue polka dots, a black vest worked over in purple and blue sequins, a red bandana knotted at the throat, blue jeans with a gold stripe down the seam, and black boots finishing in star-rowel spurs painted like small fireworks in orange and blue. All of it against flat hot pink, brushed on by hand so the strokes still show — it reads as a colour piece from across a room and as a joke up close.
