The print is a weathered Texas silhouette filled with the flag — dusty blue, cream, faded brick red, a five-point star rubbed soft — on a chalky, scraped-plaster cream ground, under heavy black wood-type capitals. It reads like something that has hung in a house for thirty years, which is roughly how long the average family here has been making the same drive. Highway 6 stitches the place to Bryan, two towns that stopped pretending to be separate a long while back. On a fall Saturday the color of the day is maroon, in every window and on every porch, and the traffic on Wellborn Road stops being traffic and becomes a slow parade. You can hear the stadium from a parking lot half a mile off. Northgate empties out in July and refills in a week. The whole town runs on a calendar that starts in August and ends with people crying in a parking garage in May.

Is the quote Steinbeck's? The Texas line is. Travels with Charley: In Search of America (1962): "Texas is a state of mind. Texas is an obsession." The city versions, this one included, are Crum Art's own riff on him rather than anything he wrote.
