Texas Hill Country Art | Concan State of Mind | Betsy Crum

Texas is a state of mind, Steinbeck wrote in 1962, and an obsession. Concan is the smallest version of that obsession and the one people plan an entire year around.

Concan Hill Country Art by Betsy Crum

The piece is a weathered Texas shape carrying the flag — dusty blue field, cream and faded brick-red bars, a white star worn thin — over a cream, chalky, scraped-plaster ground, with heavy black letterpress capitals across it. Frio means cold, and the river is not being poetic about it: it is spring-fed, it is clear down to the gravel, and it will take the wind out of you in the middle of August. Bald cypress lean out over the water with their roots exposed. US 83 bends along with the river between limestone bluffs. Down the road at Garner they have been dancing on the concrete under the pavilion on summer nights since the 1940s, and if you climb Old Baldy early you can see the whole green line of the valley. Cell service is bad. The cabins book a year out, and it is the same families every July, on the same bend, in the same shallow spot.

It belongs in a river house, a lake house, or a hallway of Texas places — the rest of the region is in Texas Hill Country art, and it hangs well with the other travel art prints.

Questions

Is this a Steinbeck quote? Partly. Travels with Charley: In Search of America (1962) gives us "Texas is a state of mind. Texas is an obsession." That is his. Concan is not — the town versions are Crum Art's own riff on the line.

Who buys it? People who go every summer, and people who used to. It turns up as a housewarming gift and as a thank-you to whoever books the cabins.

Who made it? Betsy Crum, working in Texas. Original family artwork, printed to order.

Is this print good for a western or ranch-style living room?

Absolutely. Crum Art prints work beautifully in western living rooms, ranch house walls, and collected interiors. The editorial quality and distinct Texas point of view make them strong anchor pieces for a rustic western or Lone Star-inspired home.

How is this print made and what materials are used?

Every Crum Art print is produced on 100% cotton rag paper using archival pigment inks — the same standard used in fine art galleries. Built to last without fading, and hand-signed by the artist before it leaves our Fort Worth studio.

Can this print be part of a gallery wall?

Yes — many Crum Art prints are part of series and are designed to group together as a statement western gallery wall, or hang individually as a standalone piece. Each image is sized to fit standard frames for easy styling.

Will this look like an original painting or a print?

Crum Art takes the scanning and photographing of original paintings seriously — we work to capture the texture of the canvas or paper the original was created on, so that texture shows through in the print. Combined with the cotton rag paper's own subtle surface and the hand-signing, many customers say they cannot tell if it's an original or a print. That's intentional. These are not flat digital reproductions — they are fine art prints that carry the soul of the original.
