Bowie Fan Art in Photo-Realistic Colored Pencil
Caya Crum drew David Bowie's eyes twice — right above left — and labelled each one in her own hand. Worked in colored pencil and built up in layers, it catches the lashes, the wet line of the lower lid and the flush of the surrounding skin, with the Aladdin Sane bolt crossing both studies in red and blue. It is the most patient drawing in her Bowie group, and the quietest David Bowie art print she has made.
Set one above the other, the two pupils do not match. That difference is the whole reason the drawing exists — and it is the detail most people have looked at a thousand times without ever being told what they were seeing.
The gaze everyone misremembers
Bowie's eyes were the same color. In 1962 a schoolfriend, George Underwood, hit him during an argument over a girl and permanently damaged the muscles of his left iris. The pupil stayed dilated for the rest of his life, so that eye simply read darker in photographs — a condition called anisocoria, rather than two different eye colors. The two stayed friends, and Underwood went on to make artwork for his records. This is a portrait of an injury that turned into a trademark.
