Why burnt orange?
Because in Texas, burnt orange isn't just a color — it's a whole season of Saturdays. Betsy painted this HOWDY in it because it's the warmest loud color on the wheel, and against a cream background it glows instead of shouts.
Will this read as Texas to someone who isn't from Texas?
It reads in layers. Anybody anywhere sees a cheerful vintage carnival HOWDY with stars punched in the letters and rows of bulbs above and below. Texans catch the second layer — the burnt orange wink — with no logo or landmark anywhere on the print. Both readings work; one of them just comes with a fight song stuck in your head.
Who should get the burnt orange HOWDY?
New grads, a first apartment in Austin, the tailgate host who owns forty koozies, or anyone who bleeds burnt orange. Because it's team-spirit adjacent rather than merchandise, it still looks like art on the wall ten years after graduation.
