The Ball jar has been in American kitchens since the 1880s, holding peaches one summer and wildflowers the next. It is the least precious object on the shelf and the hardest working, and it has never once been called beautiful by anyone using it. Betsy painted it as a still life, a genre traditionally reserved for pheasants and silver. The promotion suits it.
This one goes over a sink, on a pantry wall, in a breakfast nook — the rooms where the jar itself would be. A jar of wildflowers has centered plenty of supper tables, and the painting will do the same job in a dining room.
