New Braunfels Texas Hill Country Art by Betsy Crum
Here it is a distressed Texas silhouette filled with the flag — dusty blue, cream, faded brick red, a worn white star — laid over a chalky cream plaster ground and stamped with rough black letterpress capitals. Fitting for a town settled in 1845 by people who brought bakeries and dance halls with them and then found water that stays about seventy-two degrees no matter the month. The Comal runs roughly two and a half miles from spring to mouth, one of the shortest rivers in the country, and most of the state has floated it. Cypress roots hold the banks together. Somebody's cooler is always tied to somebody's tube. Up the road in Gruene the dance hall floor has been taking boot heels since 1878 and nobody has bothered to level it. And for ten days every November the whole town eats sausage on purpose, with an accordion going.
Good over a bar cart, in a river house, or lined up with the rest of the Texas Hill Country art. It also turns up as a hostess gift for whoever owns the place on the river.

Where does the line come from? Steinbeck, in Travels with Charley: In Search of America, 1962: "Texas is a state of mind. Texas is an obsession." He wrote it about the state. The city versions like this one are Crum Art's own riff, not Steinbeck's words.
Does it work as a gift? Usually it is one — wedding weekends here, first houses, and anyone who spent childhood summers on that river.
