Pastel Cowboy Hat — Impressionist Cowboy Hat Art by Betsy Crum

One rust-colored felt hat, floating on a wash of sage green, peach, and teal. Betsy Crum painted it the way an impressionist would — loose, visible brushstrokes, edges that dissolve into the background until you can't say exactly where the brim ends and the evening begins. Monet never made it out to the ranch, but this is roughly what would have happened if he had.

Painting the hat alone is the oldest portrait trick there is. A cowboy's hat is the most personal thing he owns — it takes the shape of the head that wears it and the weather it's been through — so a hat by itself is a portrait with the face politely left out. You get to decide whose hat this is. Ours has clearly had a decent life.

Why is there no cowboy in the Pastel Cowboy Hat painting?

Because the hat is the portrait. It's the most personal thing a cowboy owns — shaped by one head and one long stretch of weather — so painting it alone is a portrait with the face left out. You supply the cowboy.

Can a cowboy hat really be impressionist art?

This one is. Western subject, soft technique — loose visible brushstrokes and edges that dissolve into a sage-and-peach wash. Think Monet, if Monet had ever worked cattle.
