One cream Pearl Lager can, front and center, with rays fanning out behind it like the label just achieved sainthood. The big red circle, the XXX mark, and underneath, hand-lettered the way sign painters used to do it: THE GEM OF FINE BEER. Betsy Crum sets the whole thing on an olive-green ground about the color of a deer-lease jacket, so the can does what Pearl always did best — glow like it deserved the attention.
Pearl was San Antonio's beer for generations, brewed on the river north of downtown. The old brewery grounds are now the Pearl district, where folks stand in line for brunch on the same spot the lager used to roll out by the truckload.
