Nine Pearls — Beer Can Art by Betsy Crum
It's the same vintage Pearl Lager flat-top can, painted nine times in a three-by-three grid — round Pearl logo, XXX crest and all — with the color turned to a different station in every square. Pink, yellow, and green across the top like a Fiesta parade; black, blue, and green through the middle like the river after dark; purple, red, and something moodier holding down the bottom row. Each can tuned to a different mood: back-porch heat, river water, dancehall sweat. Same beer, nine ways to feel about it.
Betsy paints in the pop tradition — repeat the thing you love until the repetition becomes the point — and nothing in Texas asks for that treatment louder than a Pearl can. This is San Antonio art to its bones, and it's got kin: Betsy also painted the Pearl script as a neon line drawing glowing yellow, because one love letter to this brand was never going to be enough.

Is Pearl beer still made?
Yes. The original Pearl Brewery poured its last San Antonio batch in 2001 after more than a century on the river, but the brand never died — Pabst owns it and has since brought Pearl back as a Texas-only beer, brewed in the state. So the can in this painting is vintage, but you can still put the real thing in your other hand.
What happened to the old Pearl Brewery in San Antonio?
It became one of the best second acts in Texas. After the brewery closed in 2001, the grounds were redeveloped into the Pearl — San Antonio's food, shopping, and farmers-market district — and the historic brewhouse itself reopened in 2015 as Hotel Emma. The can in this print is the ancestor of a whole neighborhood people now plan weekends around.
How old is the can in the Nine Pearls painting?
It's the vintage flat-top style — the squat steel can from the era before pull tabs, the kind you opened with a church key. That's the can Pearl rode through its mid-century heyday, which is why the grid reads as old San Antonio even when a square goes hot pink.
