Carl doesn't draw cities, he collects them. He goes out with a camera, photographs the signs and storefronts and landmarks that a place actually uses, and then fits the pictures together into one long panorama. Nothing in it came from a stock library or a sketchbook. Every piece stood on a real San Antonio street, and a fair number of them still do.
That's what separates this from most collage wall art: the raw material is the city itself. Nothing here was invented to fill a gap in the composition — it was found, photographed, and put in its place. And the way people look at it never varies. They lean in, locate the sign from their first job, and then notice it's sitting three inches from something they'd completely forgotten existed.
He gave the same treatment to Houston and to Dallas, and each city comes out with a different rhythm. San Antonio's runs warmer and closer together, which is roughly how the town itself is laid out.
