San Antonio Art | San Antonio State of Mind | Betsy Crum

Steinbeck wrote that Texas is a state of mind, an obsession, and then went further and called it a nation in every sense of the word. He was right, and he was also thinking a size too big. San Antonio has been its own country since before Texas was one, and it has never once asked to be updated.

"Texas is a state of mind" is his, from Travels with Charley: In Search of America (1962). The city versions in this series are Crum Art's own riff on it — Steinbeck never wrote "San Antonio is a state of mind," and we are not pretending he did.

San Antonio Texas Flag Art by Betsy Crum

The city's name sits in heavy worn type across a distressed Texas flag, the star bleeding up through the letters like it was on the wall first and the words came later. San Antonio is a slow town that wakes up early: breakfast tacos handed through a window before six, the Pioneer Flour Mill sign burning red over the river long after everything around it has gone dark, the crack of a cascarón on the back of your head in April and confetti still turning up in your collar in May. It is 103 degrees and everyone is outside anyway. It is Bexar pronounced bear, with nobody bothering to explain why.

It holds a narrow wall on its own and does better in company — hang it beside Forever Hemisfair, or pull the rest from San Antonio art prints.

Product FAQ

Why does San Antonio get its own state of mind?

Because it has been its own country since before Texas was one and has never asked to be updated. The print treats the city as a nation rather than a subdivision.

Does it need a big wall?

No. It holds a narrow wall by itself and does better in company, which is convenient in a town full of old houses with small rooms.

Is this a moving-in print or a moving-out print?

Both, in about equal numbers. It reads as affection without going sentimental, which is the right register either direction.

Which San Antonio print goes up next to it?

Forever Hemisfair is the usual pairing, and the rest of the city is close behind it.

Will this look like an original painting or a print?

Crum Art takes the scanning and photographing of original paintings seriously — we work to capture the texture of the canvas or paper the original was created on, so that texture shows through in the print. Combined with the cotton rag paper’s own subtle surface and the hand-signing, many customers say they cannot tell if it’s an original or a print. That’s intentional. These are not flat digital reproductions — they are fine art prints that carry the soul of the original.

What sizes does this print come in?

Our fine art prints are available in standard rectangle and square sizes. Rectangles: 8x10 unframed matted to 11x14, 11x14 unframed, 16x20, 18x24, and 24x36. Squares: 8x8 unframed matted to 12x12, 12x12 unframed, 16x16, 20x20, and 24x24. Each size ships ready to frame, making it easy to find the right fit for your wall.

How do I make a gallery wall with art prints?

Start with an anchor piece and build outward — many Crum Art prints are part of series designed to group together as a statement gallery wall, or hang individually as standalone pieces. Since every image is sized to fit standard frames, mixing sizes is easy: lay the arrangement out on the floor first, keep about two to three inches between frames, and center the whole grouping at eye level.
