Shipley Do-Nuts Sign — Donut Art by Betsy Crum
The sign stacks up the way it always has: a fat glazed donut on top, SHIPLEY in red script beneath it, then THE GREATEST NAME IN DO-NUTS in plain block capitals, and COFFEE at the bottom like an afterthought that turned out to be the point. Betsy set the whole pole against a pale pink sky — the color Houston actually goes at about six in the morning, when the lot is already half full and the glazed are still warm.
Read the claim on that sign again. Not the best donut, not the freshest — the greatest name. Shipley's has been open since 1936 and has never once softened that line, which is the kind of nerve you only earn by outlasting everybody who doubted it. The sign says nothing about kolaches, either, and yet.
