Cash — a Cowboy in Profile by Caya Crum
Every other cowboy Caya has painted looks you right in the eye. Cash doesn't. He's turned to the side, chin up, smoke drifting off toward the edge of the picture — pale pink hat, red bandana, gold shirt, and behind him a blue sky with one long pink cloud sitting over the water.
It changes what the painting is about. You stop reading his face and start wondering what he's looking at. He's the calm one, and the only one of them with water behind him.
Where He'll Work in Your House
Because he faces off the edge of the frame, he's lovely at one end of a gallery wall — he points your eye back into the rest of it. On his own over a sofa or a console, the sky does the work and the room gets softer instead of louder. Why is he sideways? He's the odd one out on purpose. Caya painted the rest head-on and gave Cash the horizon instead.
What's the water behind him? Flat blue with a scatter of darker dots — call it a lake, a stock tank, or the Gulf. She left it open.
What colors does he live with? Gold, coral, pale pink and a lot of sky blue. He's the easiest of them to put in a warm, neutral room.

Which way is Cash facing?
To one side, in profile, chin lifted, with the smoke drifting off past the edge of the canvas. He is the only cowboy in Caya Crum's series who does not meet your eye, and the whole painting turns on it. Instead of reading his expression you end up following his line of sight out of the frame.
What is Cash wearing?
A pale pink hat, a red bandana at the throat, and a gold shirt. The pink hat is the detail nobody catches from across a room and everybody grins at up close.
What is behind him?
Blue sky with one long pink cloud lying across it, and water underneath, painted flat blue with a scatter of darker marks in it. He is the only cowboy in the series with water in the picture. Whether it is a lake, a stock tank or the Gulf is left up to you.
