The Marfa version of this painting became a cult favorite, mostly because people liked seeing an ordinary storefront handled with the same seriousness as a landscape. Kennard is the harder one. Marfa arrives with a reputation already attached. Kennard is a Piney Woods town in deep East Texas, near the Davy Crockett National Forest, and the store there is a landmark in the plainest sense of the word. Betsy paints it deadpan and lets that sit.

How does it relate to the Dollar General Marfa print?
Same idea, different town. Marfa is the West Texas one and the better known of the two; Kennard is the East Texas counterpart. They hang well as a pair.
