I found this out near Ernst Tinaja, where the desert gets so stark and so red it could pass for the surface of another planet. Somebody had chalked wish you were here on the back of a sign — a note left by a stranger, for a stranger, or maybe by a lover who took a photograph to send back home. I will never know who wrote it. But it read as though it had been written for the world, and that is why I kept it.
The photograph is that exact moment — the chalk writing is real and was already there — a wide, lonesome landscape carrying a message that somehow finds everybody who stands in front of it. As desert wall art it is quiet enough for a bedroom and big enough for a stairwell, and it hangs with the rest of the Big Bend work: the Big Bend photomontage, the Marfa Stardust sign, and the Guadalupe Mountains Horse.

A stranger — Betsy has no idea who left it, which is most of why the picture works. A note written by somebody, for somebody, that reads as though it was written for the world.

How do I make a gallery wall with art prints?
