Out in Marfa the sky does something it cannot do anywhere near a city. There is nothing electric for a long way in any direction, so the dark comes in complete and the stars arrive with it — more of them than you know what to do with. The Stardust sign sits under all of that, holding its small patch of light against the whole thing. The darkness is deliberate: in a bright room it reads as a glowing shape, and in a dim one the stars come up.
I have always loved this stretch of West Texas, and the picture is my way of keeping the feeling. As night sky art it runs deep and quiet, which makes it a bedroom or a hallway piece more than a living-room one.
