Maverick — the Toile Cowboy by Caya Crum

Maverick stands against hot pink in a pale lavender shirt printed all over with little horses and riders. What is printed on Maverick's shirt?

Tiny horses and riders, repeating all over a pale lavender ground. From six feet away it reads as texture. From two feet away it is a herd. That gap between the two is the entire pleasure of the painting.

What exactly is toile?

A printed fabric where one small scene repeats endlessly, usually in a single color on a pale ground. The old French versions had shepherdesses and cottages in them. Caya Crum's version has broncs, and Maverick wears it entirely straight-faced.
