"THE ALPHABET OF TEXAS" runs across the top, and beneath it Caya painted twenty-six small watercolor tiles, A to Z, each one a Texan in good standing. A is for the Alamo. B is for Buc-ee's — the beaver himself, grinning like he owns the interstate, which in fairness he mostly does. D is for Dr Pepper, F is for free-tailed bats, K is for kolaches, N is for NASA, Q is for queso. By the time you reach W for Whataburger, Y for Y'all, and ZZ Top closing it out at Z, the case is made: no other state fills a chart like this without borrowing.
It reads like a primer and works like a portrait. Enchanted Rock and Hamilton Pool for the scramblers and swimmers, a pump jack at O, a pecan tree at P, the Stockyards at S, a taco at T, the Rio Grande Valley at V. What did U end up being? A horseshoe. Twenty-six letters is a lot of letters, and Texas has always respected a practical solution.
Why do free-tailed bats get F? Because Texas made the free-tailed bat its official flying mammal, and every summer evening whole rivers of them pour out from under Austin's Congress Avenue Bridge at dusk. F was never going to anyone else.
What does X stand for? Tex-Mex — making this the rare alphabet chart where X doesn't have to fake it with a xylophone.
