Twenty-six line-drawn portraits on warm pink: the Texas women who have inspired and continue to do so, A to Z. Ann Richards leads off; Barbara Jordan, Lady Bird Johnson, Janis Joplin, and Beyoncé hold their letters; and yes — both Selenas made the roster, because Texas produced two and honors accordingly.
Look close and the roster does its own arguing. Ann Richards was the 45th Governor of Texas and is still the state's patron saint of the well-timed line — Betsy gives one of her sentences a whole print of its own. Barbara Jordan came out of Houston and stopped a room cold at the Watergate hearings. Lady Bird put wildflowers along the highways and never once called it a hobby. Janis Joplin got out of Port Arthur; Beyoncé never had to leave Houston; Corpus Christi's Selena Quintanilla and Grand Prairie's Selena Gomez each earned a letter on their own terms. Caya draws every one of them in the same unfussy line at the same size on the same pink ground — governor, congresswoman, first lady, and a row of singers, nobody scaled up. It reads like a syllabus and hangs like a pep talk.
