Chinoiserie Bluebonnets — Bluebonnet Art in Blue & White by Betsy Crum
Three bluebonnet stems, hand-drawn in loose ink and wash — blues on a plain white ground, nothing else on the page. No pagoda, no rococo border, no hillside behind them: just the flower itself, caught in the kind of quick, sure line that looks effortless and isn't. It's the sparest piece in the chinoiserie farm set and the only one that isn't an animal. While the lamb and the rooster got the full porcelain treatment, the bluebonnet showed up already dressed in blue and white.
Betsy drew them the way bluebonnets actually stand along a fence line in spring — leaning a little, unbothered, entirely certain of themselves. The result is Texas wildflower art and blue and white art at the same time, which is a neat trick for three stems and some water.

Why is there a wildflower in a set of farm animals? Somebody has to grow outside the show barn. Every animal in the set stands on Texas ground — this is the ground.
Are bluebonnets really this blue? Very nearly. The real flower runs a deep violet-blue, which makes it the one subject in the set that needed no recoloring to join a blue-and-white world.
Is it still chinoiserie without the scrolls and scenery? Yes — the palette and the brush line carry it. Think of it as chinoiserie with everything but the flower edited out.
Who made it? Betsy Crum drew these three stems in Texas, a few counties from where they come up every spring. Original Crum family artwork, printed to order — the rest of her work hangs here.
