Chinoiserie Bluebonnets — Bluebonnet Art in Blue & White by Betsy Crum
Three bluebonnet stems, hand-drawn in loose ink and wash — blues on a plain white ground, nothing else on the page. No pagoda, no rococo border, no hillside behind them: just the flower itself, caught in the kind of quick, sure line that looks effortless and isn't. It's the sparest piece in the chinoiserie farm set and the only one that isn't an animal. While the lamb and the rooster got the full porcelain treatment, the bluebonnet showed up already dressed in blue and white.
Betsy drew them the way bluebonnets actually stand along a fence line in spring — leaning a little, unbothered, entirely certain of themselves. The result is Texas wildflower art and blue and white art at the same time, which is a neat trick for three stems and some water.

What exactly is a bluebonnet?
The Texas state flower — a blue lupine that covers pastures and highway medians every spring. Texans pull over on the shoulder to photograph their children sitting in them, which tells you most of what you need to know about the relationship.
How is this piece different from the painted animals in the chinoiserie set?
It's the one drawing in the bunch — loose ink-and-wash line work in blues on plain white, with no scenery and no border. If the animals are the finished platters, this is the beautiful sketchbook page that earned its own frame.
