A brown-and-tan rabbit sits calm and upright among blue-and-white ginger jars, each jar painted with its own tiny bird, while orange peonies climb the toile behind her. She is the warm one of our chinoiserie set: where her siblings turned delft blue, she stayed exactly the color a rabbit ought to be, and the orange florals lean in to agree with her. Why is the rabbit brown when the rest of the chinoiserie set is blue?
Because she's a rabbit, and rabbits don't take direction. The rest of the set went porcelain blue and white; she sat down in her own brown coat among the ginger jars and dared the painter to argue. Nobody argued.
